Howard Everitt Pepper, 84, of Wilmington, NC, passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at his home, in the comforting care of his wife, Ruby.
Howard was born inWilmington, NC, (Masonboro Sound Community) on November 4, 1928, one of 10 children of the late William Fred Pepper and Mary Catherine Farrow Pepper.
He was a former employee of France Neckwear and retired from Merritt-Holland Gas Company (Empire Gas). Howard was a veteran of the United States Army and a member of Masonboro Baptist Church.
In earlier years he was a pitcher with the Masonboro Clamdiggers and the Masonboro Ramblers Baseball Club, and earned his first money opening oysters at Uncle Henry’s Oyster Roast.
Born into a Masonboro Sound family, the local waters were always a big part of his life. As a young boy, he learned from his father the skills needed to enjoy bountiful catches waiting to be made in the waters and creeks near Trails End; his favorite place to “put in”. Clamming, fishing, shrimping and oystering were all a part of growing up as a “sounder” in his beloved Masonboro community. Howard passed along the knowledge and traditions of the Masonboro waterman mostly to his now deceased son, Ricky. Many happy days were shared between them while guiding their boat across the Intracoastal Waterway in search of the day’s catch.
He is survived by his loving wife of forty- four years, Ruby Pepper; sons, Michael Howard Pepper of Wilmington, Randoph Everitt Pepper of Richmond, VA, and Brian Andrew Pepper (Carol) of Clayton, NC; step- children, Becky Lucas, Julie Travelstead (Terry), Peggy Traylor (Paul), Wayne Brown (Patti), and Roger Brown; sister Denie Smith; and brothers, Thomas Pepper and Jimmy Pepper; also several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Especially remembered are his son, Dwight Frederick (Ricky) Pepper, step-son, Wesley Brown, son-in-law, Berry Lucas, and daughter-in-law, Barbara Pepper, all preceding him in death.
The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Friday, September 6, 2013, at Andrews Valley Chapel.
A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, September 7, 2013, at Masonboro Baptist Church Cemetery, Wilmington, by the Rev. Preston Wells.
Memorial gifts may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC, 28491, or Masonboro Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 1501 Beasley Road, Wilmington, NC, 28409.
Our family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to the staff of Lower Cape Fear Hospice for the kindness, care, concern, and love shared with Howard and with us, and their assistance in making him comfortable and being able to live at home during his extended illness.
